1. LECTURES

Lecture 7:

Methods to clipping mask

  • Method 1. 
  • Method 2. Rasterization. Object > Rasterize > Color model: Grayscale > Resolution: Medium (150 ppi). Background must be white, or else cannot change the color of object.
  • PS there's another "Rasterize" at Effect > Rasterize. 


  • Method 3. Cropping (but it's permanent)

  • Ctrl+x = Switch between Fill and Stroke
  • Ctrl+2 = Lock/Unlock

  • 🔥How to add image = <Command+Shift+P>
    • NOT by directly drag image to open, NOT by "Open" file
    • Because it will loss a lot of functions, eg. color swatches
  • Experiences as a Freelance Illustrator 
    • Very doable, tried freelance and travelled to a few countries. Tips: Endurance to deadlines and good design habits
    • He have been using Adobe AI for 27 years. It's a new function for around 4-5 years. Built so that it can be used on Ipad or tablet.
  • Use a lot of Ctrl+7 and Ctrl+8
  • Ctrl+8. Important to unify or control many things from one instruction

Assignment 1: Animated Album Cover (20%)

Prologue
Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, on December 12, 1915, Frank Sinatra rose to fame singing big band numbers. In the '40s and '50s, he had a dazzling array of hit songs and albums and went on to appear in dozens of films, winning a supporting actor Oscar for From Here to Eternity. He left behind a massive catalog of work that includes iconic tunes like "Love and Marriage," "Strangers in the Night," "My Way" and "New York, New York." He died on May 14, 1998 in Los Angeles, California. 

Project Brief

  • Choose one song listed below, appreciate the song, hear it through and understand the lyrics. 
    • Fly me to the moon 
    • The way you look tonight 
    • Come fly with me 
    • Girl from Ipanema 
    • New York, New York
  • Sketch initial ideas, figure out storyline, illustrate and compose and animate a ‘moment’ base of your understanding from the chosen song. This moment will be the album cover. 
  • Illustrated typography must be included. 
  • Foreground mid ground and background must be considered and illustrated. 

he e-portfolio is an online blog (Blogspot) that is updated on a weekly basis, throughout the semester. It documents the summary of the lectures, instructions, feedback, reflections and further readings on a project, by project basis. Compile and document all information (failures, successes, epiphanies, sketches, visual research, printouts, websites, images, charts, etc.) logically and chronologically.

  • Storytelling - Does your proposal tells a story? Does it show emotion? it's important not just to draw a character standing with a blank expression
